Sky Bingo is not the first online bingo site to go green; years ago All Bingo Club ran a promotion to re-forest a section of the Caledonian Forests. Basically they planted a tree for every new member who signed up, now Sky Bingo have teamed up with Sky Rainforest Rescue and WWF UK, with the aim of raising £500 for the Amazon rainforest campaign. This is a Facebook campaign and all new ‘likes’ on their Facebook page trigger funds that go towards saving 1 billion trees in North-West Brazil.

Greenhouse gas emissions are caused by deforestation, in fact this is the cause of up to a fifth of the world’s emission problems. This is the equivalent of all the emissions from cars, planes, trains and ships in the world!

The area of Acre in Brazil is the targeted region, where deforestation between 1996 and 2005 caused approximately 22 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This rainforest offers a livelihood, food and shelter for as much as 30 million people, the majority of the Amazon population. The destruction of these forests threatens the traditional way of life of these people. For online bingo to help with the problem is a pretty big thing; particularly considering that Brazil is so far removed. Although the rainforests of the Amazon also supplies the rest of the world, including the UK, with products such as fruit, nuts, cocoa, timber and hundreds of plants which are used in medications that treat serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.

Skybingo.com believes it is important to support this cause and you get to help too. Anyone wanting to help tackle climate change, must simply click the ‘like’ button on the Facebook page and become a fan. They will then donate 25p to the campaign, per ‘like’ throughout February 2012.
