If you were to open a fish and chip shop in Aberdeen, what would you call it? A name doesn’t get more succinct than “Our Plaice”, The Ashvale Fish and Chip Restaurant, what do you think? It might all be in a name, but there is much more to this chippie than meets the eye – they recently received the top national award for their contributions to the local community. This is what I call good PR, and what better way to get more people into your fish and chip shop than offer them games of fundraising bingo?

BINGO!!

The awards ceremony took plaice in London and was hosted by Jay Rayner – food critic. They had to batter off stiff competition from Andy’s Fish Bar in Melton Mowbray and Elite Fish & Chips in Lincoln.

Get this – they raised over £50 000 for charity last year and have been raising funds since 1985. As well as the regular bingo nights, they offer prize raffles, quiz nights, race nights and even sponsor the local football team. One wonders how the owners of this shop even have the time to be frying up portions of fish and chips, let alone soaking and cooking up mushy peas, and putting together fish cakes.

The award is sponsored by Nortech Foods and it was because of this restaurants unique approach that they won the prize. They have raised funds for tons of charities; are one of the largest fundraising organisations in the north-east, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is one of their favourite funds. They were praised for their community awareness, and this is an ideal example of what you sew is what you reap; I’ll bet because of their charity work they are one of the busiest chippies in town!
