Playing Bingo – Fun or Social Addiction?

Essentially bingo is classified as a soft gambling activity; however, there are some people who look at this game as containing an addictive quality. I always say that its not bingo that’s the problem – people are the problem and some never know when enough is enough. People have been hauled into court for stealing from their employers and they are allowed to say “but Your Honour, it was not my fault, I stole to feed my bingo addiction”. People should take responsibility for their actions – they should not be allowed to get away with believing so stupid. Blaming something as inanimate as a game for their weakness; bingo is not addictive, people have addictive personalities.

Speak to 90 year old Lucy Barker, a great-grandmother from Hemlington – she will tell you that bingo is her claim to fame for living a very long life. She certainly doesn’t look 90 years old and despite the doctor not letting her travel to Las Vegas, she reckons she is healthy too. She says that going out to the bingo at her community centre three nights a week, keeps both her body and her mind active – she even calls the bingo balls. She is also very grateful that the doctor lets her have one Guinness a night, even though she needs to take medication.

Playing bingo is fun, it is a vitally important source of social interaction for many elderly and infirm people, who don’t have to go out to play and are even learning to play this game online. Demographics are also changing due to the playing of online bingo and we find more young people as well as men, are playing the game too. The prizes are nothing short of brilliant, probably better then what you get in a live bingo club and quite frankly the game can’t be beat, for a ton of winning fun.
