This year Gala Bingo ran the Ultimate Bingo Championship competition, where finalists were taken to Gibraltar to play in the ultimate bingo game. The top prize was £30,000 in cash, with a holiday to Las Vegas thrown in for good measure. Roy Stokes, aged 62, from Welling who hardly ever plays bingo, was attending the final as a guest of wife Linda and she is the true bingo fan. Anyway, to cut a long story short, this gentleman who is now retired and once worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland, won!

Out of 60,000 Gala bingo (including their online bingo site) members throughout the UK who entered the six month-long competition, there were only 154 players who made it through to the finals in Gibraltar. Linda won her place following a successful regional round in Bexleyheath and Feltham.

Roy says he plays bingo perhaps 2 or 3 times a year and when he was playing in the final, he says it took about 15 minutes until he won and that was it. He didn’t get time to react to the win, as before he knew what was happening, they had him up the stage with a Gala Bingo cheque for £30,000 in his hand and a luxury trip to Las Vegas. He said it was “just unbelievable!” It took both Roy and Linda a couple of days to get used to the idea that they had won.

The competition took place over three rounds, in the first play-off he won £10,000, and then went on to triple his winnings. Linda declined to play in the final, she let him do all the work, saying – “it was just too nerve-wrecking and when he won I was crying through the shock”. They will be getting a new kitchen with their winnings and they are planning to give their grand-kids a really good Christmas.
