Besides all the great games you get to play when you play on any given day at Gala Bingo, it has always been nice to think about the fact that they staunchly support Sue Ryder Care. Just how staunchly they have supported this charity so far has perhaps not been as widely known as it should, but they have risen over £1.5million for the charity since they first made £1 million their target in 2008. This hugely successful partnership was celebrated during a House of Lords reception which took place at the end of January.
There have been some record breaking attempts in terms of this fundraising Gala Bingo drive; perhaps one of the most notable being the “Highest Game of Bingo” ever played! A group of extremely determined Gala Coral employees, plus a Sue Ryder Care employee got on their climbing boots and trekked to Everest Base Camp. What did they do there? Why, they played bingo – what else? This attempt in itself raised more than £110,000! They got Gala directors to go ‘back to the Floor’ and they even got Barack Obama’s step-mother, Kezia helping out the cause. There were bungee jumps, cycle events, skydives and other mountaineering events such as the UK Three Peaks, and the fact that they raised so much money during what was considered to be a recession; doesn’t say much for the recession does it?
The initial target set was the end of 2009 and £1million, however, because of increased and ongoing support from employees, once they had reached this target is was decided to forge ahead to reach £1.5million by December 2010. Gala Bingo online also had a target to reach and they raised more than £75,000 with ‘Mrs Obama’s Bingo’ as well as scheduled bespoke Sue Ryder Care games.
