There is no doubt about the fact that the game of bingo has been used for a very long time, in raising funds for charity. In fact just about every bingo business we know of has a pet charity or two, or even more. By the same token, bingo players are the kind of people who also give generously – they have a tendency to be sharing and caring people, and one lovely lady from Crew recently proved that she is of the ‘giving generously’ ilk. Kind hearted Cora Grew, who lives at Beechmere in Crewe, celebrated her birthday by raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, instead of getting gifts from her family and friends, she got them to donate to this cause; plus she put together a whole host of fund raising events.
As you can probably guess, one of the first fund raising activities on Cora’s books was bingo – although she organized several events throughout the entire week during her birthday bash with a difference. 71 year old Cora rose over £1,200 for the charity. She specifically chose Macmillan Cancer Support, because they had given her so much help when her husband was stricken with cancer.
Cora got all the residents of Beechmere together for her big birthday bash which started off with bingo to get the ball rolling. After that, a party was held with a singer, but the highlight for her was when five male residents dressed in drag and did the can-can. It sounds like a great night was had by all. This was a lovely way to thank Macmillan, and we could all learn a thing or two from Cora too. Birthdays are not only about receiving it seems, one can also enjoy a really great birthday by giving too.
